The busiest shopping season of the year is fast approaching, a time when many Canadians increase spending on gifts, new clothes, entertainment and travel. Where we spend those dollars has an impact on local economies and on our own communities. Battle River Power Coop encourages members to spend locally through the Member Benefit Program. Consumers can find a wide variety of goods and services in local communities, as demonstrated by the diverse group of businesses in the program. There are value added incentives on DJ services (it’s not too early to book them for your spring wedding), automotive services, insurance, tires, propane refills, equipment rentals and computer services. Check out the offers on photography, flowers, gifts, women’s wear, shoes, quilting fabric and sporting goods. Hair, beauty and spa services are in the program. You can take advantage of a promotion on a hearing aid or a massage. There are even companies that specialize in construction, renovation, metal fabrication and flooring.

Before you buy online this holiday season, or any season, consider the benefits of shopping local. There is the advantage of seeing merchandise in person and an opportunity to try on wearables before you take them home. You can have a conversation with the business owner or sales person and get product information and advice. There is even the possibility of sharing your shopping excursion with a friend.

For those who want to avoid the crush of crowded stores there are solutions that still promote local spending. Order flowers or arrange a photography session over the phone. Shop when businesses open in the morning, and if possible on weekdays. Plan to shop early in the holiday season rather than waiting until the middle of December.

Local businesses are a big part of the rural economy and essential to communities. We hope you keep your Battle River Power Coop Member Benefit Card in your wallet as a reminder to spend locally during the holiday season and all year long.
